The people of Otuoke trooped out to celebrate Nihi John for his historic walk to the home town of the president.  Nihi said  President Jonathan deserved to be honoured  for conceding defeat in the March 28 election.


Nihi John Oladele, began his walk from from Abuja to Otuoke shortly after Hashimu Suleiman trekked from Lagos to Abuja to celebrate the victory of the president elect. Since then, several Nigerian youths have followed suit in such solidarity walks across the country.

 This prompted Mohammed Shehu, an aide to Mohammadu Buhari to advise the youths to channel their energies towards more productive ways of showing solidarity to the incoming administration instead of trekking.

Face-off with N-Assembly: Why I didn’t sign amended constitution – Jonathan

LAGOS — President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, gave reasons why he refused to assent the constitution amendment bill forwarded to him by the National Assembly even as some eminent lawyers backed his decision.
Raising about 13 grounds, President Jonathan in a letter entitled: “Re: Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Fourth Alteration Act, 2015,” questioned the power the National Assembly has to arrogate to itself the power to pass any constitution amended without the assent of the President.

 

He also picked holes in whittling down the power of the President, allowing the National Judicial Council, NJC, to appoint the Attorney-General of the Federation, separating the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation from that of the Federal Government, and limiting the period when expenditure can be authorized in default of appropriation from six months to three months, among others.
Leading lawyers, who endorsed the president’s action were Professor Itse Sagay (SAN), Chief Emeka Ngige (SAN), Mr Festus Keyamo and Mr Kayode Ajulo.
Shocked by the President’s letter, the National Assembly Conference Committee, comprising members of the Constitution Review Committee in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, yesterday, began a two-day retreat to look into the bill and the attendant consequence of the president’s action. It will come out with a definite position on the issue next week.
Mark stops senators from debating President’s letter
The President’s letter was read on the floor of the Senate during plenary yesterday by the Senate President, David Mark. But he stopped Senators from debating the President’s refusal to assent to the amended bill, when some senators, led by Senator Sadiq Yar’Adua, APC, Katsina Central, raised a Point of Order, seeking permission to that effect.
The President, in the letter also lamented what he termed as usurpation of powers of the executive by the legislature in the fourth alteration of the constitution.
Shortly after the Senate President finished reading the letter, Senator Abubakar Yar’Adua, APC, Katsina Central, raised a Point of Order, seeking that the Senate be allowed to debate the President’s letter.
He said: “I think it is important for us to discuss that letter and see whether there is need for us to consider the letter or not. I think he has raised very serious fundamental issues, especially in terms of our conscience as lawmakers and his own position as the chief executive officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That is why I am raising this point or order.”
But the Senate President refused his request, saying he was earlier communicated by the Conference Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, that it was holding a two-day retreat between yesterday and today, to discuss and take position on the president’s letter.
Mark said: “Obviously, this letter is not like any other normal letter. We can’t discuss the letter unless you have a copy of it. So, the first reaction is for me to make copies available to everybody. And you go and study it. And if you notice, there is an announcement also by the Constitution Review Committee that they are going to meet. So, that will straight away go to them. I agree with you that weighty issues have been raised. It’s a peculiar case, so everybody will be involved.”
Where lawmakers erred —Jonathan
In the letter, Jonathan said that the two chambers of the National Assembly failed to meet requirements for altering Section 9 (3) of the 1999 Constitution.
“Section 4 of the Fourth Alteration Act, 2015 seeks to alter Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution by the insertion of a new subsection 3A, which dispenses with the assent of the President in the process of constitution amendment. However, this alteration can only be valid if the proposal was supported by votes of not less than four-fifths majority of all the members of each House of the National Assembly and approved by a resolution of the Houses of Assembly of not less than two-thirds of all the states as provided by Section 9 (3) of the 1999 Constitution.
“This is a fundamental requirement of the constitution and in the absence of credible evidence that this requirement of the constitution was met in the votes and proceedings of the National Assembly, it will be unconstitutional for me to assent to this Bill,” he explained.
Besides, the President said there were a number of provisions in the Act that altogether constitute flagrant violations of the doctrine of separation of powers enshrined in the 1999 Constitution and unjustifiably whittle down the executive powers of the federation vested in the president by virtue of Section 5 (1) of the 1999 Constitution.
Jonathan observed that the power vested in the President to withhold his assent to bills passed by the National Assembly was part of checks and balances contained in the constitution.
He said Sub-section 5a of Section 58, which provides that the bill becomes law after the expiration of 30 days in the event that the president fails to signify the withholding of his assent, may be inappropriate.
“The provision appears not to have taken cognizance of the afore-mentioned variables, the vagaries inherent in the legislative process and the wisdom in requiring two-thirds majority to override the President’s veto.
“In the light of the above, I am of the view that the failure to signify assent by the President within the prescribed period of 30 days should rather be treated as dissent, which would require two-thirds majority to override.”
Jonathan faults NASS over alteration
Jonathan also faulted the National Assembly over its alteration, seeking to limit the period when expenditure can be authorized in default of appropriation from the six months provided in the constitution to three months, saying: “I am of the view that this provision has the potential of occasioning financial hardships and unintended shut-down of government business, particularly where for unforeseen reasons and other exigencies in the polity, the National Assembly is unable to pass the Appropriation Act timeously.
“Our recent experiences with the process of passing the Appropriation Act do not justify the reduction of six-month time limit in the constitution,” he insisted.
The President also faulted Section 84a that created the new Office of Accountant General of the Federation distinct from the Accountant General of the Federal Government, saying it did not address the funding requirements for establishment of the office.
“It is necessary to clarify, for instance, who staffs and funds the office of Accountant- General of the Federation and from whose budget he will be paid since he serves the three tiers of government,“he stressed.
He also said it was important to state who will exercise oversight powers over the office, noting that the National Economic Council, which was mainly an advisory body, was now charged with the responsibility of recommending those to be appointed to the office of the Accountant-General.
The President equally faulted the National Assembly in separating the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation from the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General from the Commissioner for Justice in the respective states of the federation and also the provision for independence of the Office of Attorney General by guaranteeing tenure and funding.
He said as desirable as the alterations were, there were some provisions that violate the doctrine of separation of powers and also negate what he called “the age-long independence and absolute discretion that the office has enjoyed for centuries since its creation in the middle ages.”
He said the first setback was that the alteration was silent on who was the Chief Law Officer of the Federation, noting: “This is a serious lacuna, which may create implementation challenges.”
President has minor justification—Sagay
On the controversy, Professor Itse Sagay, SAN, said though the President has a minor justification in refusing to endorse the amendment in the 1999 Constitution, some of the
sections he rejected would have been good for the country.
Sagay said: “There is the main issue of whether the President is really entitled to sign the constitution, that is the constitution could have been changed without him, that issue is not yet resolved and probably won’t be resolved until it gets to the Supreme Court because every constitutional change goes through a process of two thirds vote in the National Assembly and approval by state Houses of Assembly.
“So, it raises the question of after going through that process, is it still necessary to present it to the President for his signature. That issue is there but the way the people behave this time is as if they needed the President to vote.”
Speaking further, the legal icon said: “If you look at his reasons for refusing to endorse the amendment, his main reasons are that the executive powers are being depleted to the advantage of the National Assembly and the National Judicial Council.
“For example, he said the office of the Accountant-General was split into two. One for the federation and the other for the Federal Government. That is a very good thing. I do not know why he should be against that because the present Accountant-General of the Federation operates more as the Accountant-General of the Federal Government. It is usually unfair to other parts of the federation, that is why that position was made, it was a sensible provision.
“As for the National Judicial Council appointing the Attorney-General, I do not think it is a good idea. It is going too far because the Attorney-General exercises executive powers in the sense that he can decide to institute a criminal case and he can decide to end a criminal case. I think that should remain with the executive and not with the judiciary.
“As for meeting the provision of Section 9 (3), I do not know what he expects them (National Assembly) to meet. They have met the Two Thirds requirements. The only provision of the constitution which requires three quarter votes are those that affect human rights. These ones do not affect human rights as far as I know. I don’t see why he is complaining about Section 9(3).
All told, he has some minor justification but the bulk of what has been rejected would have been positive for the federation.”
President did the right thing —Ngige
On his part, Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, said the president’s action was in order. He said: “My view is that I whole-heartedly support the President’s action by not signing the bill. It is only a fool that will append his signature to something that would make him look foolish. I am surprised that the National Assembly wanted the President to sign off his powers in the constitution amendment process.
“The President did the right thing and it is now left to be seen whether the legislators would override the President’s action. I am, however, in doubt that they will get the required number needed to do that as things stand now in the country. My advice is that they suspend the constitution amendment process until the next dispensation.”
Jonathan is correct —Keyamo
In like manner, Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, backed the President on rejecting the constitution amendment bill. According to him, the National Assembly failed in attaching the votes and proceedings on the sitting that approved the clause to change the mode for constitution alteration.
He also sided with the President in rejecting the proposal to give the National Judicial Council the responsibility of appointing the attorney general, asserting that it breaches the doctrine of separation of powers.
He said: “I think the President is correct and he divided his objection into two. In the first one, he gave reasons he could not sign the issues dealing with healthcare, education and all that.
“In the second one, dealing with four-fifths requirement needed to alter the mode for constitution amendment is a special provision in the constitution and if you need to change the provision by which the constitution should be amended, you need a higher number than the normal two-thirds and the President said that they did not attach the votes and proceedings to show that that number was met. That was very fair by him. There is no evidence that you have met the requirements before sending it to me. So he is correct on that one.
“On the requirement for free education and all that, what the President is saying is that you cannot impose free healthcare on private hospitals and private schools; you should restrict it to government schools. So do you want people to start taking private schools to court? It should be restricted to government hospitals because you would otherwise destroy the spirit of free enterprise in the country.’’
On separation of Attorney General and Minister of Justice
“What the President said was that they would be infringing on the principle of separation of powers. For example, it would mean giving the judiciary the power to appoint the attorney general who is an executive member and don’t forget that the attorney general sits in the exco.
“You are now saying that the judiciary should appoint him or recommend him to the President for appointment subject to the approval of the Senate, so that appointment is coming from the judiciary whereas in the past the NJC only recommended judges.
“Now, the danger is that when a government fails in its anti-corruption war, you blame the president; meanwhile the person who is responsible for anchoring the anti-corruption war of the government is the attorney general who is not appointed by the government but may actually be destroying the anti-corruption war and yet the government cannot touch him.
“So it is a two-edged sword, but the government gets the consequence. So you could have a case where the attorney general can destroy the government’s anti corruption battle but the government cannot sack him.”
It’s constitutionalism in action—Ajulo
On his part, Mr Kayode Ajulo commended the president for using his discretion, saying this is constitutionalism in action.
“When you look at it very well, the president has the discretion to either sign the amendments or not. What the President has done is the right thing because this is constitutionalism in action. It is well inscribed in the law and if the President exercises his discretion, so be it. Either rightly or wrongly, it now lies with the Supreme Court to do the required

MAN SHOT DEAD AFTER POLICE CHASE IN HOUSTON

Houston police have shot and killed a man after a police chase that started with a suspected traffic violation.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating. A spokesman for the office, Deputy Thomas Gilliland, said that after the chase, two Houston police officers told the suspect to show his hands, but as they approached his car he reached back into his vehicle. Suspecting that he was reaching for a weapon, both officers opened fire multiple times, killing the man.

Neither officer was hurt.

A statement from the Sheriff's Office didn't say if a weapon was found.

Authorities say the chase began when police tried to pull over the driver for "suspicious activity," including unsafe lane changes. They said the vehicle eventually struck two other vehicles at an intersection before stopping.

Rapper Ruggedman puts Abuja-based promoter on blast

Rapper Ruggedman shares a bitter experience he had recently with an Abuja-based promoter named Ejiro Okhipwo. Read below... 

I do not know why i always want to help out. I guess its my nature but it gives room for a ot of people to take advantage and repay my good with evil. It has happened once too many and i am tired of it and this Ejiro Okhipwo will not go unexposed for the fraudster/trickster that he is.

He is the promoter of the so called most beautiful girl pageant in Abuja,so i was told when i met him a few months ago while in the middle of a messed up promoters event,i guess they know each other smh. We became friends and i agreed to make an appearance at his October 26th event in Abuja for an honourarium of 100k penre, all for promoting my artist o. Na there i enter one chance.

1. He delayed till the Friday before his event to get in touch with me and pleaded to pay 50k into my account to balance off as soon as we landed Abuja. As a good person i agreed,since i had already given my word.

2. By 3.30pm no bank alert and i thought he was trying to wait till 4pm when banks would have closed to say "we have paid the money,but i guess they didd not post it in time thats why you havent gotten the alert". So i called and asked that the person with the cash should be waiting for us at the airport.

Thinking i was dealing with a rational human being,i decided to head to Abuja so that it wont be said that i refused to come because of the lean change he did not send.

LANDED ABUJA 8:30PM and no cash at the airport,no Ejiro Okhipwo either. We proceeded to the hotel where we stayed until the next day. No welfare,i had to take care of everything from my pocket o (make hungry no kill us where we dey wait for useless people in Jesus name...).

SATURDAY 5:00PM still no word or the presence of Ejiro Okhipwo but someone called fuja who works for him brought two packs into my room. On opening it i found some cold,milkless,sugarless oatmeal. The second pack contained boiled yam,under friend plantain under baked beans LWKMD. I wondered if it was breakfast,lunch or both....at 5PM O.

The event was slated to start by 7pm and by 6pm i sent Ejiro Okhipwo a BB message that i will not leave the hotel room if he doesnt pay what was agreed because i was already suspecting foul play. No response and we lounged till the next day.

SUNDAY: hotel management informs us that Ejiro Okhipwo said everyone should check out of the hotel by12noon. We called him only for him to send me txt messages that "i am heartless for not coming to his show and will fuck me up" LMAO!!!

A show that he did not pay the lean honourarium "we" agreed to? The deal was to pay before i leave Lagos,i even managed to get to Abuja and he did not have the courtesy to come see us? Even if he did not have the money to pay,i have done loads of free shows for small time promoters like him. His would not have killed me.Now here he was threatening to fuck me up. I laughed so hard. 
A few people i know called him and he kept bragging and threatening (over the phone) that he will deal with me and fuck me up.

Finally: Mr Ejiro Okhipwo i have been in Abuja since then and i have not seen you let alone getting fucked up by you (if i hear).

I have even had enough time to apply for and get visas for me and my artist and yet we havent seen you.

Desmond,your PAs friend was involved in an accident and suffered internal bleeding while driving artists who came for your event and when you were told all you said was "its none of your business". God will forgive you.

The girls you brought from Lagos who worked for you and you ran off without paying them or giving them transport fare to go back will never forgive you.

The babe (name witheld) you brought from Lagos and you abandoned her in the hotel (because she no give you do) will never forgive you.

Anambra State University named after late Odumegwu Ojukwu

Anambra State University, Uli has been named after late biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, announced the renaming of the University in a live broadcast on Anambra Broadcasting Service Television ABStv on Friday November 1st. The governor said the university was being renamed in celebration of Ojukwu'sposthumous 80th birthday.

The former military governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria died on November 26, 2011, aged 78.

'I cried during the film', says Jeff Radebe about Mandela movie

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe cried more than once during some of the scenes of the film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”, which premiered at The Zone in Rosebank, Johannesburg, on Sunday.

“It was a very emotional movie. It depicted not only the struggle by Nelson Mandela but also by the people of South Africa,” Radebe said.

“I cried many times during the movie because it was so emotional.”  Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor said she had mixed feelings after watching the film.

“I have mixed emotions about it. I hope its going to be successful [globally]. It was a good mix of entertainment and history,” she said.

African National Congress deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa praised the film.

“I thought the movie was great. It depicted Nelson Mandela very well. And it was a good narrative of our history,” he said.

Many of South Africa’s well-known names were at the film’s first premiere.

Actors, politicians and businessmen and women showed up in their ’Sunday best’ to watch the film.

After the two-and-half hour film ended, people waited outside the main cinema to applaud the cast.

Naomie Harris, who plays Mandela’s former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, walked out of the venue holding hands with Madikizela-Mandela herself.

Winnie’s daughter and granddaughter, Ndileka, followed close behind them.

The film will be released in South Africa and the United States on November 28.

In this exclusive interview with TAIWO OLUWADARE, Olamide bares his mind on issues including the late Dagrin.

Excerpts:

Could you tell us about yourself?

My name is Olamide Adedeji. I’m a native of Abeokuta, Ogun State. I was born and bred in Bariga, Lagos. I’m a student of Tai Solarin University where I’m studying Mass Communication. I’m from a family of seven.

How did you start out as rapper?

I discovered music was in me while growing up. In 2003 I started writing my own lines and performing at shows and the rest today is history.

What was growing up like?

Growing up was not that rosy neither was it that bad. Growing up in the ghetto was quite challenging because you’re looked down on by kids from upscale neighbourhoods. In the ghetto I was given ghetto orientation which is never to look down on myself no matter what.

Tell us about your love life?

I have nothing to say about that.

Late Dagrin seemed to have influenced you a great deal. What does he mean to you?

He’s more like the late Martin Luther King. I call him Barrack ‘O Grin. He is such a blessing to Nigeria. He really paved the way big time for up-and coming rappers like myself back in the day. It’s not like there has not been other people before him but his impact was awesome! Dagrin is a great artiste and I respect him; he is a legend.

Lately you have become so big. How are you filling the vacuum Dagrin left behind?

I don’t know. It is depend on people’s perspective. I just live my life the way I feel and besides, I’m not the only rapper in the industry. There are others like Lord of Ajasa. However I’m only doing my thing. Now people are comparing me to Dagrin and that feels great. I see it as a blessing from God. I can’t say I’m the best rapper; that would be ridiculous. It’s like saying Jay Z is the best rapper. However, it’s not like Jay Z is better than B.I.G but people see the love they have for B.I.G in Jay Z. B.I.G died when he started making money and people were heartbroken. And Jay Z can never open his mouth and say ‘I’m better than B.I.G.’ The same thing applies to me too. I can’t say I’m better than Dagrin.

How do you get inspiration for your music?

I discovered a long time ago that rap music is all around me so I draw a lot of inspiration from my environment. I just feel comfortable being a rapper as opposed to singing. Seeing rap icons like Dagrin and the love he had for the art just overwhelms me.

How do you handle your female fans?

(laughter)We dey try. Behind every successful man there is a woman. For me it’s not just about a woman but women so I take advantage of it positively. I don’t sleep with my female fans; I treat them like my sisters.

What’s been your happiest moment?

God has done many things for me. I can’t tell which moment is the happiest but one I can remember was the release of my first album, Rhapsodi. I was so happy when it was released. That album registered my name in the annals of the history of rap music in Nigeria.

What was it like meeting I.D Cabasa?

I met I.D Cabasa when I went to record with a friend in a studio. We met each other and struck the right chords and the connection took off from there. That’s how I ended up having his support. And ever since, he’s been giving me that special big brotherly love.

What’s your advice for up-and-coming artistes?

My advice is that they should put God first and do less of unnecessary hard work.

If not rap what would you be doing?

For now, I don’t see myself leaving the rap world. I would rather be running a rap music label.

What is the meaning of Ilefo Illuminati

It is slang in my neighbourhood in Bariga, Lagos. Ilefo simply means swag. 

There is talk that you belong to illuminati. How true is this?

I have been correcting that impression in all my interviews and I’m not going to get tired of it. I only feel I need to keep representing my own people and communicating with them in a way that they will understand me. So, I want to tell my people that I don’t belong to illuminati or any secret society.

What has been your challenges?

Wow! It used to be an issue of finance. Right now the major one we are facing is the issue of piracy. And it’s crazy men! I feel it should stop but I also know it can never be stopped!

What are your dreams?

I want to be a global brand that is why I’m looking up to God. It is not by my power but by the grace of God. I feel honoured and great that I’m one of the top profile rappers in town.

My Focus Is To Keep Nigeria A United Country – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan weekend reaffirmed his resolve to remain focused and keep the country a united and indivisible entity despite the campaign of calumny against his administration.

Dr Jonathan made the bow before a multitude of crowd in Yenagoa at the 2nd Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day anniversary.

Represented by the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt Caleb Olubolade (rtd) President Jonathan said his resolve is based on the belief that his Presidency was borne under the banner of God and made through a free and fair election.

He said, “On my part as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I will remain committed and focused to keeping Nigeria united and peaceful under the banner of God who made it possible for me to be here as your elected President in that free and fair election.”

The President noted that the people must show gratitude to God for the peace being enjoyed in the country, despite what he described as a few distractions.

Jonathan asked the people to support the successes noticed in the transformation agenda of the present administration at the state and federal levels.

The President who hailed the state governor for his leadership and initiative for instituting a thanksgiving day in the state, emphasized the need to thank God at all levels of government for His divine protection and guidance as they strive to bring about peace, development and prosperity.

“With what the state government is doing in terms of projects and programmes, the government is keying into the transformation agenda of the federal government which, I believe the benefits of these will definitely turn things around quickly for the better.”

Earlier in his remark, the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson called for active participation in the celebration of the Thanksgiving Day, stating that the event is for every Bayelsan within and outside the country.

Dickson who expressed appreciation to the people of the state for their show of support particularly the youths, whom he observed had not disrupted any on-going projects in the state.

According to him, the existing peace is also attributable to the efforts of traditional rulers, security and the unity among the three arms of government.

He said, “I can bear testimony to God’s abiding mercies and blessings upon this land. You are all aware of what is going on and our state is on a new page of hope.

” In spite of the numerous projects going on across the nooks and crannies of our State, I have never heard of any serious disturbance from any community that has led to any stoppage of work. And that is testimony to the goodness of God and to the peace, stability and development and therefore prosperity that has come to reign in all the parts of our state..

In a message, the Guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, stressed the need for people to always appreciate God’s blessings irrespective of their challenges as they are stepping stones in life.

Commenting on the attitude of Nigerians towards thanksgiving, Rev. Dr. Ukpai noted that, most people are not given to such disposition but rather find faults in almost everything.”

                                                                                       

Eminem named Artist of the Year at YouTube Music Awards

NEW YORK — The first-ever YouTube Music Awards on Sunday, improvised with plenty of celebrity cameos thrown into the mix, saw awards going to rapper Eminem and hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

The show made a clear bid for the quirky, a benefit of being streamed by YouTube rather than broadcast on television.

If the music itself sometimes felt a little overshadowed by all the hoopla, it shouldn't surprise. The show was also a sort of announcement by YouTube of its intentions to take a bigger role in the music industry.

The music awards market is almost as crowded as the music market. YouTube featured big stars such as Lady Gaga to attract attention, while keeping enough of an outsider perspective to differentiate itself from MTV, the Grammys and other music powerhouses.

Although the Google-owned site has for years been a go-to place for music fans around the world, the site is now expected to introduce a paid music service by year-end.

"There was nothing scripted tonight," said actor Jason Schwartzman, who, along with performance artist Reggie Watts, hosted the show, which was directed by Spike Jonze.

Eminem won the Artist of the Year award. Video of the Year was awarded to Girls' Generation, who are megastars in South Korea but are still making inroads into the U.S. music scene.

Breakthrough of the Year went to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, whose songs include the gay rights anthem, "Same Love."

Walk off the Earth, along with KRNFX, took the Phenomenon Award for their version of Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble," while the Innovation Prize went to DeStorm, who won for "See Me Standing."

And in an acknowledgement of the hefty amount of user-generated content that goes on YouTube — everything from yawning kittens to cellphone video of major world news — YouTube gave out something called Response of the Year.

That prize went to Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix, for their cover of Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive." Stirling is a star among violinists — but doesn't have the star power of Katy Perry, another of the night's nominees.

Along with Gaga there was a shaky-cam performance by Tyler, the Creator, and Earl Sweatshirt, both of the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All hip-hop collective.

There were cultural references, including the quirky song "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" from Norwegian duo Ylvis, a viral hit earlier this year.

YouTube has positioned itself in recent years as a major source of new music videos for fans.

Sites such as YouTube effectively function as on-demand stations for music, with fans able to listen to play lists over and over just for watching the occasional commercial.

The shift highlights some of the challenges — and opportunities — for artists. Access to music is easier than it's ever been, thanks to sites such as YouTube, music blogs, file-sharing software and more. But it's also become that much more difficult for musicians to earn a living.

YouTube is expected to introduce an option by the end of the year to let music fans skip the commercials via a paid subscription service. This would pit YouTube directly against services such as the music streaming service Spotify, whose business model has been criticized by musicians for squeezing artists

Saturday was a tragic day for the Omotoshos as a member of the family, Azeez Omotosho, 35, a panel beater, was killed by a policeman in Oshodi area of Lagos State. The killer cop has been arrested and he is in detention.

The incident happened when Azeez, a father of three, went to pick up his family at the family house, at 28 Aina Street, Ladipo, Oshodi, where his wife also has a shop.

As he got to the junction of his house, he saw his friend’s car parked by the side of the road, with some policemen attached to Shogunle Divisional Headquarters standing beside it.

He stopped to plead with the officers for his friend to be released, but an officer, identified as Corporal Gabriel, became angry and shot him at close range.

Gbenga Aderanti, a friend of the deceased said: “The picture is not yet clear to me, because he left me at about 9.45p.m. and promised to come back to see me because I was holding his phone. He wanted to go and drop his wife and children at home.

“The next thing I saw was people running helter-skelter, after which it was confirmed that it was the gunshot we heard that killed him. I really do not know what transpired between him and the policemen as I was still at the spot he left me.”

Aishat Olaosebikan, a sister to the deceased said: “They shot him at about 8.55p.m. The deceased was coming to pick his wife and children at her shop and when he got to the junction very close to the house, he saw his friend’s car which the police had arrested. He came down from his car to beg for the release of his friend.

“The next thing Corporal Gabriel did was to raise his gun and shoot him two times at close range. Immediately he shot my brother, he escaped from the scene of the incident,” Olaosebikan stated.

The killer cop who was later arrested and is now in detention spoke on Sunday to our reporter and other members of the late Azeez family, behind bars.

Corporal Gabriel said: “I actually killed Azeez Omotosho, a.k.a. Panel. It is the devil’s work, please forgive me. Yesterday (Saturday) I was not myself, I was heavily drunk when I perpetrated the act.”

The killer cop was said to have been serving in Shogunle Divisional Headquarters, Oshodi Lagos.

Kareem Ajibade, a friend to the deceased said: “The killer cop usually operates illegally at night, even when he is off duty, you will see him carrying gun about at night.”

Before he was gunned down, Azeez resided at 6, Jimi Thomas Street, Oshodi, Lagos. He was shot at the junction of Oyegunwa in Oshodi, where the police set up their illegal road block.

Following the “Skelewu” drama between Davido and acclaimed director Sesan, it seems Wizkid has decided to take Sesan’s side. The “Caro” singer posted a tweet yesterday that may have been a subtle jab at Davido. 

The tweet reads, “Jaiye Jaiye Video looks mad!!!!!!! Directed by Sesan!!! awa frosh!!!!! we no be smellos! hahaha!”

We don’t know what frosh or smellos means but its provocative… it gets the people going!
